LOS ANGELES - The No. 10 Fresno State water polo team fell 12-9 to No. 7 LMU on Saturday afternoon at the Burns Aquatics Center.
Â
Freshman Noa Markovsky scored three goals on Saturday, her first career hat trick. Senior Hailey Andress contributed three. Caitlyn Mossman, Megan Cranley and Susanna Martinez each had one. In the cage, freshman Katelyn Mobley had 12 saves for her ninth game this season with double-digit saves.
Â
How it Happened
Bulldog senior Hailey Andress struck first with 4:51 on the clock in the first. LMU went on a three-goal run that was ended by Susanna Martinez on a last-ditch effort from far out to beat the shot clock. The teams combined for three goals in the final minute of the first quarter as Megan Cranley tied the game with 32 seconds left. LMU quickly regained the lead with a behind-the-back score with 17 seconds on the clock. Moving Katelyn Mobley down on the offensive end, the Bulldogs moved the ball until Noa Markovsky fired at the buzzer to tie the game at four at the end of the first.
Â
Coming into the game to start the second, Caitlyn Mossman fired from center after the entry pass from Kira Anderson. Her shot put the Bulldogs up 5-4 early in the second. After a plethora of offensive turnovers by both teams, LMU ended the scoring drought and tied the game at five each with 3:43 left before halftime. The Lions took the lead with a strong play at center and another strong strike from the right side extended their lead to 7-5 with 42 seconds before the half. LMU got one more across before the half on the ricochet off Mobley's arm, ending the half on a 4-0 run and a 8-5 lead at halftime.
Â
LMU extended its scoring run into the third quarter, and Andress ended the five goal scoring run with her second goal of the game with 6:02 left in the third quarter. That was Fresno State's first goal since its first possession of the second quarter. Shortly after, Andress dished a pass inside to Charli Munoz that drew a penalty. Andress' penalty shot was blocked by the Lion keeper and the 'Dogs returned to defense. LMU shot but hit the post, and the Bulldogs took quick action as Markovsky scored her second goal of the afternoon to put the Bulldogs back within two, 9-7.
Â
LMU opened scoring a minute into the fourth quarter on a power play situation, extending the lead to 10-7. The Lions added another on a penalty shot shortly after. Markovsky scored again, notching her first hat trick of the season but LMU responded with another goal on its next possession.
Â
Andress scored once more, but the Bulldogs couldn't get the offense to roll in the final minutes.
