GLENDORA, Calif. - The No. 12 Fresno State water polo team defeated Azusa Pacific 19-7 on Saturday afternoon at the Citrus Aquatic Center. Fresno State moves to 11-8 overall (2-1 GCC) this season, and will face No. 2 UCLA tomorrow.
Â
The Bulldogs were led in scoring by freshman Riaan Bryant, who netted a career-high six goals on Saturday. Bryant became the third Bulldog to score six goals in a game this season, joining Hailey Andress and Georgia Daly.
Â
Hailey Andress, Noa Markovsky and Kira Anderson each added two goals. Charley Stephens, Georgia Daly, Megan Cranley, Susanna Martinez, Ashley Williams, Sidney Strickland and Marley Garwick contributed to the scoring efforts with one goal each.
Â
How it happened
Azusa Pacific scored the opening goal with 6:01 on the clock, but Kira Anderson evened the score on the next possession. After a Bulldog steal by Megan Cranley, the offense cashed in as Anderson hit Riaan Bryant to give the Bulldogs the lead. Hailey Andress scored her first of the game, adding one on a powerplay. Sidney Strickland followed suit for the next score with help from Bryant, capitalizing on another powerplay. With 2:05 left in the first, Andress struck again to make it a 5-1 game in favor of the Bulldogs. The teams traded goals in the final 25 seconds with Azusa Pacific hitting one at the buzzer. After the first quarter, the Bulldogs led 6-2.
Â
The Bulldogs opened the second with two unanswered goals from Bryant and Ashley Williams, extending the lead to 8-2. APU ended the run with 4:29 left before half. After a pair of shot attempts were turned away, Bryant was able to break through with two-straight to put the Bulldogs up 10-3 with 1:17 left before half. The Cougars added two more before the break, including another one at the buzzer.
Â
At halftime, Fresno State led 10-5.
Â
The Bulldogs saw a bit of a scoring drought out of the break, not scoring until the 3:45 mark in the third. Anderson and Bryant added goals, both with assists from Andress. Cranley got in on the scoring action with her first goal of the game with 2:05 left in the third, making it a 13-6 game for the Bulldogs.
