'Dogs battle at No. 2 UCLA
3/15/2026 3:05:00 PM | Water Polo
LOS ANGELES – The No. 12 Fresno State water polo team fell 14-8 to No. 2 UCLA on Sunday at the Spieker Aquatic Center. Sunday's game was the final nonconference contest for the Bulldogs this season, as they prepare for three Golden Coast Conference games at home before hosting the conference championship on April 10-12.
Hailey Andress and Riaan Bryant led the team with two goals each. Senior Susanna Martinez, and freshmen Charley Stephens, Noa Markovsky and Katya Aleshina all added one.
How it Happened
After a slow start in the first, Fresno State kept it close with UCLA for the first three quarters before the Bruins broke away late.
UCLA struck first just under two minutes into the game. The Bruins extended their lead to 4-0 before Hailey Andress ended the scoring drought and got on the board with 14 seconds left in the first. The Bruins attempted a shot at the final buzzer, but Riaan Bryant slapped it away.
The teams saw another slow start to the second as neither team scored until the 5:35 mark as UCLA extended its lead to 5-1 with the goal. Another three minutes went by without a goal for either team before Susanna Martinez scored to put the Bulldogs on the board in the second. Only one other goal was scored before halftime as UCLA made it a 6-2 game at halftime.
The Bruins extended the lead to start the third, scoring two unanswered to make it an 8-2 game. With 2:35 left in the third, Bryant took advantage of a 6-on-5 chance and scored her first of the game. She scored the Bulldogs' next goal with a lob from deep to beat the shotclock, making it an 8-4 game with one minute left in the third. The Bruins added a ninth goal on a powerplay chance to end the third.
UCLA scored its most goals in the fourth quarter, and the Bulldogs were unable to keep up. The Bruins opened with two unanswered before Noa Markovsky ended the run on a powerplay chance with the assist by Andress. UCLA responded with a goal on its next possession, to end any Bulldog run. Fresno State stayed in it with a converted penalty shot by Charley Stephens. The teams traded 6-on-5 goals as the Bruins took advantage of one first, and Andress followed suit with the assist from Martinez. In the final 90 seconds, the teams traded goals as UCLA added one on a penalty of their own and Katya Aleshina got the final goal across to make it a 14-8 game. Katelyn Mobley came up with a big save as time wound down, and Kira Anderson saw a shot miss for a last-chance effort.
