Spotlight for the thrower
Senior Maria Lawson has had a great indoor season to this point. She is coming off of her first career event win, in any season or event. Lawson won the weight throw at the UW Invitational last weekend. She has finished in the Top 3 in each indoor event this season. Lawson has had some of her best throws of her career so far this season, taking second in the weight throw at the Silver State Invite and third at the Spokane Sports Showcase before winning the event at the UW Invite.
Â
In Reno for the indoor season opener, the Clovis native had a throw of 18.20m/59-8.5 for a new personal best, and her farthest throw since the 2024 indoor championships. On her third attempt, she surpassed her previous personal best by nearly two inches.
Â
Multis back to work
Ella Spaulding and Madison Hutton will compete in the pentathlon at the Husker Invitational, the first multis event for the duo since the indoor season opener.
Â
Flashback to the opener: Spaulding took second in her first indoor pentathlon of the season, scoring a career-best 3,922 points. Spaulding had her best event in her final event of the day, winning the 800m run with a scored time of 2:24.49. She took second in the high jump with a leap of 1.72m/5-7.75 on her third attempt at the height.
Â
Hutton made her return to the indoor pentathlon after taking a year off following her first place finish at the Mountain West championship in 2024. The senior placed fourth on Thursday with 3,726 points. Hutton's best performance came in the 60m hurdles in 8.72 seconds.
Â
Back in action
Liz Tarczy is back in her groove. Tarczy was named the Mountain West Field Athlete of the Week after winning the high jump at the Silver State Invite with a personal best indoor mark of 1.82m/5-11.5 at the indoor season opener. The San Diego native successfully hit the mark on her third attempt at the height.
Â
The reigning Mountain West indoor and outdoor champion eyes the indoor program record as she inches closer to the top mark that hasn't been touched since 1988. Not only is Tarczy inching closer to the program record, she currently ranks 17th in the nation and the Top 16 athletes advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Look back at last week's record
Rhiannon Walker set the Fresno State indoor record in the women's 5000 with a time of 17:15.29, taking second in the event at the UW Invitational. Her time bested the previous record by nearly six seconds and was the fastest by a Bulldog since 2024. Her time is Top 15 in the Mountain West this season.
