Andress sets record, 'Dogs win two on Saturday

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 10 Fresno State water polo team went undefeated in day two of the ASU Invitational on Saturday, defeating UC Santa Barbara and Cal Lutheran.

Fresno State combined for 48 goals in the two games while holding its opponents to a combined 13 goals. The Bulldogs defeated UC Santa Barbara 26-9 and followed with a 22-4 win over Cal Lutheran later in the afternoon. The 26 goals scored against the Gauchos were the second-most in a game in program history.

Hailey Andress led the Bulldogs in scoring with 10 goals in the two games. On Saturday, she cemented herself as the program's all-time leading scorer with 221 career goals. She passed Brooke Ochoa who became the program's leading scorer last season.

Game 1 recap - vs UC Santa Barbara
Fresno State hopped out to an early 4-0 lead before UCSB got on the board with 2:26 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs tacked on two more goals to end the period with a 6-1 advantage. After a steal by Marit van der Kolk, the sophomore converted the goal to extend Fresno State's lead early in the second. UCSB scored its second goal of the afternoon off a powerplay chance.

The teams traded goals, twice more in the quarter as Fresno State held on to a 9-4 lead with 3:36 left before halftime. Fresno State went on to score three unanswered goals, creating a larger buffer over the Gauchos. UCSB tacked on another goal in a powerplay chance but Sidney Strickland scored one just before halftime, giving the Bulldogs a 13-5 lead at the break.

Georgia Daly and Megan Cranley got the scoring started for Fresno State in the second half. UCSB got on the board in the third with a penalty shot. Fresno State added three more unanswered from Caitlyn Mossman, Daly and Katya Aleshina. Both teams scored one more goal apiece as the third quarter ended with Fresno State ahead 19-7.

UCSB scored first in the fourth. Hailey Andress added another Bulldog goal off a penalty shot and the Gauchos would score on their next possession. Fresno State ended the game on a six-goal scoring run.

Game 2 recap - vs Cal Lutheran
The first two and a half minutes of the game were scoreless before Hailey Andress ended the drought with her first goal of the game. Cal Lutheran tied the game at one a minute later. Fresno State heated up, scoring five unanswered to take a 6-1 lead into the second quarter.

There was another slow start to the second quarter with neither team scoring until Georgia Daly netted one with 6:18 on the clock. Daly scored again off the assist from Riaan Bryant, extending the lead to 8-1. Cal Lutheran ended the Bulldogs' scoring run with their only goal of the quarter, but the Bulldogs struck another four-goal streak to end the half up 12-2.

The scoring run continued into the third as the 'Dogs opened with three unanswered before Cal Lutheran got on the board with 3:45 left in the period. Van der Kolk and Charley Stephens tallied additional scores for the Bulldogs, extending the lead to 17-3.

Cal Lutheran scored first in the fourth but Fresno State kept them off the board the rest of the match, scoring five of their own. Daly scored at the final buzzer to make it a 22-4 final.
