Late rally falls short against CSUN
3/17/2026 9:48:00 PM | Baseball
The Bulldogs dropped to 7-12 on the season, while the Matadors improved to 11-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN jumped out early, plating two runs in the first inning and adding another in the second to take a quick 3–0 lead. The Matadors continued to apply pressure in the third, extending the lead to 4–0 before Fresno State answered with a solo home run from Cayden Munster to get on the board.
After CSUN pushed the lead to 6–1 in the fifth behind a two-run homer from Vaughn Coleman, the Bulldogs responded. Fresno State scored twice in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI single from Brady Hewitt and a sacrifice fly from Michael Boyd to cut the deficit to 6–3.
The Bulldogs continued to chip away in the sixth inning. Munster delivered again with an RBI triple before Ethan Payne followed with an RBI double, trimming the deficit to 6–5.
However, CSUN answered with two runs in the seventh and then broke the game open in the ninth when Coleman launched his second home run of the night, a three-run shot that stretched the lead to 11–5.
Fresno State made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, scoring four runs. Sky Collins delivered a two-run single, Marcus Nolen added an RBI double, and Munster capped his big night with an RBI single to bring the Bulldogs within two. But the rally fell short as the tying run never came to the plate.
NOTES
- Fresno State out-hit CSUN 13–16 but left nine runners on base.
- The Bulldogs scored six runs over the final four innings.
- CSUN's Vaughn Coleman accounted for more than half of his team's RBIs (6 of 11).
