SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team finished the Silicon Valley Classic on Sunday. Fresno State fell in a close game to Santa Clara by a final of 2-1 to open up the day before taking the second game of the doubleheader, 11-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Santa Clara 2, Fresno State 1
Fresno State took the lead in the opening frame thanks to an aggressive play on the base paths. The Bulldogs executed a double-steal to perfection as Emma Martinez slid across home plate safely to give Fresno State a 1-0 lead. An RBI single with two outs by the Broncos tied the game in the second, 1-1.
With no runs scored between the third and fifth innings, Santa Clara broke through in the sixth with another two out RBI single that put them in front 2-1.
A single by Tiara Westbrook with two outs gave the Bulldogs life in the seventh, but Fresno State was unable to plate the tying run as Santa Clara took game one, 2-1.
Game 2: Fresno State 11, Santa Clara 8
The Bulldogs struck first in the opening inning for the second time in as many games. Olivia Hill muscled a ball that found the gap in right center as the sophomore made her way to third with an RBI triple.
In the third inning, the Bulldogs pushed across two more runs with two outs. Lorraine Alo hit into a fielder's choice to the third baseman, but a throwing error allowed the runners from second and third to score for Fresno State.
Down three runs, Santa Clara got their offense going, scoring three runs off of two fielder's choices and a throwing error by the Bulldogs as the two teams headed into the fourth tied at three.
Poor defensive play plagued the Broncos in the fourth, as Fresno State capitalized on three straight errors by Santa Clara to open up the inning. Up 5-3 following a throwing error and wild pitch, Olivia Hill recorded her second extra-base hit of the afternoon to score Alyssa Rebolledo from third. The next batter, Jamie Hicks, smacked a single to left as two more runs scored for the Bulldogs as they opened an 8-3 lead.
Santa Clara put up a run in each of the next two innings, with the score sitting at 8-5 entering the sixth inning.
Jamie Hicks displayed her power in the sixth, sending a ball off the foul pole in left field as the senior made it a 10-5 game with her third home run of the season.
With Fresno State leading 11-5, Santa Clara cut into the lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Broncos sent the tying run to the plate, but a fielder's choice ended the Broncos hope for a comeback as Fresno State defeated the Broncos, 11-8.
