Aztecs rally late to hand Fresno State 8-5 defeat
4/25/2026 7:00:00 PM | Baseball
The Bulldogs (12-27-1, 1-12-1 MW) showed fight midway through the game, erasing a deficit with a four-run fifth inning, but the Aztecs (25-18, 9-5 MW) responded immediately and never trailed again.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After San Diego State opened the scoring in the third, Fresno State answered right away on a solo home run from Marcus Nolen to tie the game at one. The Aztecs regained control in the fifth with a two-run homer from Jake Jackson, but the Bulldogs responded with their best inning of the day.
Nolen delivered again in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run blast, and Sky Collins followed with a solo home run to give Fresno State a 4-3 lead. The Bulldogs added another run later in the inning to take a 5-3 advantage.
That lead was short-lived.
San Diego State answered in the sixth, highlighted by a three-run home run from Tyce Peterson that flipped the score back in favor of the visitors at 6-5. The Aztecs added insurance in the ninth with back-to-back solo home runs to extend the lead to three.
Fresno State threatened late but could not break through against Aztec reliever Bryce McKnight, who tossed five shutout innings with eight strikeouts to earn the win.
Nolen led the Bulldogs offensively with two home runs and three RBIs, while Collins added a solo shot. Mikey Pickett paced the lineup with three hits.
On the mound, Weston Thornbury was charged with the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in relief.
Fresno State finished with nine hits but stranded six runners, while San Diego State totaled 16 hits, including four home runs.
NOTES
- Marcus Nolen recorded his second multi-home run game of the season.
