FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State couldn't hold off a late surge from San Diego State on Sunday afternoon, falling 6-2 at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs struck first in the second inning when Sky Collins delivered an RBI single to bring home Marcus Nolen and give Fresno State an early 1-0 lead.
San Diego State answered in the third, taking a 2-1 advantage on a two-run home run from Zane Kelly. The Aztecs' offense stayed quiet for several innings after that, as Fresno State starter Erik Rico kept things within reach through 6.1 innings.
Fresno State evened the score in the sixth inning. Cam Schneider led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Brady Hewitt to tie the game at 2-2.
The game turned in the seventh. San Diego State loaded the bases and pushed across two runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, reclaiming the lead at 4-2. The Aztecs added insurance in the eighth on an RBI single and capped the scoring with Kelly's second home run of the day in the ninth.
Fresno State threatened in the ninth with back-to-back singles, but a double play ended the game before the Bulldogs could rally.
