NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – A four-run fifth inning pulled Fresno State even, but CSUN answered late to hand the Bulldogs a 7-4 loss on Tuesday afternoon at Hiegert Field.
Fresno State (12-29-1) trailed early after CSUN jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two innings, highlighted by a leadoff home run in the first and another long ball in the second. The Matadors added one more in the fourth to extend the advantage to 4-0.
The Bulldogs responded in a big way in the fifth. With two outs, Mikey Pickett sparked the rally with a single before Brady Hewitt was hit by a pitch. Mikey Boyd followed with an RBI single to put Fresno State on the board, and Marcus Nolen delivered the biggest swing of the day—launching a three-run home run to left field to tie the game at 4-4.
The game remained tied into the seventh before CSUN regained control. A solo home run in the bottom of the inning put the Matadors back in front, and they added two more insurance runs in the eighth to stretch the lead to 7-4.
Fresno State was unable to mount another rally, going down in order in the ninth.
Nolen led the Bulldogs offensively with three RBIs on his fifth-inning homer, while Pickett collected a pair of hits. Boyd added an RBI, and Hewitt scored a run as Fresno State finished with five hits.
On the mound, Moose Cuellar got the start and allowed four runs over four innings. The Bulldogs' bullpen combined for five innings, with BJ Rodriguez taking the loss after surrendering the go-ahead run in the seventh.
CSUN totaled 14 hits on the day, with Matthew Thomas leading the way with four hits and two RBIs.
