Early deficit dooms Bulldogs in series opener at Washington State
5/1/2026 9:53:00 PM | Baseball
PULLMAN, Wash. – Fresno State dropped the series opener at Washington State, 5-1, on Friday night at Bailey-Brayton Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars jumped out early and never looked back, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding two more in the third to build a 4-1 advantage. Fresno State's lone run came in the third, when Mikey Pickett came around to score on Brady Hewitt's double, aided by a Washington State error.
That would be all the offense the Bulldogs could muster against Washington State starter Nick Lewis, who went the distance and allowed just one unearned run on five hits while striking out five.
Fresno State had a chance to chip away in the eighth, putting two runners in scoring position with one out, but a groundout ended the threat. The Bulldogs were held hitless in their final at-bat as Washington State closed it out.
On the mound, Drew Townson took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits over three innings. Brandon Thomas provided solid relief, giving up just one run across five innings while striking out four.
Washington State added an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-1.
