HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs jumped on the board first in the opening inning when Mikey Pickett doubled down the left field line to score Sky Collins after Collins led off the game with a double.
Cal Poly answered with a three-run second inning, but Fresno State responded immediately with three runs of its own in the bottom half. Ryan De La Maza opened the inning with a single before Cam Schneider reached safely to put two runners aboard. Zach Plasschaert drove in a run on a fielder's choice while two Cal Poly errors allowed another run to score, and Austin Young capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.
After the Mustangs reclaimed a 5-4 advantage in the third inning, Brady Hewitt tied the game in the fourth with a solo home run to right field.
Fresno State took control in the fifth inning, plating three more runs to move ahead 8-5. Marcus Nolen singled and Owen Faust doubled to set up the rally before Schneider delivered a sacrifice fly. Young later brought home another run on a fielder's choice, and an error on the play allowed De La Maza to score as well.
The Bulldogs extended the lead to 10-6 in the sixth inning on Nolen's sacrifice fly and Faust's solo home run to deep left field.
Cal Poly chipped away with a run in the seventh before erupting for five runs in the eighth inning. Dylan Kordic launched a two-run homer to center field before Casey Murray Jr. followed with another two-run blast to right, swinging the momentum back in favor of the Mustangs at 11-10.
The Mustangs added three insurance runs in the ninth inning to seal the victory.
Hewitt finished 2-for-4 with a home run, double, and two runs scored, while Faust went 2-for-5 with a double, a homer, and two RBIs. De La Maza added two hits and scored twice, and Pickett contributed a double and an RBI.
Cal Poly totaled 19 hits in the game, led by Murray Jr., who finished 3-for-4 with a home run, four runs scored, and two RBIs. Downing drove in three runs while Kordic added a pair of RBIs on his eighth-inning homer.
