PULLMAN, Wash. – Fresno State rallied late and held off Washington State for a 5-4 win on Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Fresno State (13-31-1, 2-15-1 MW) used timely hitting and a clutch ninth-inning push to secure the victory, snapping through in a back-and-forth contest with Washington State (25-22, 13-8 MW).
How It Happened
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Bulldogs took their first lead in the fourth inning. Mikey Pickett drew a walk before Brady Hewitt launched a two-run home run to right field, putting Fresno State ahead 2-1.
Washington State answered in the fifth, capitalizing on a two-RBI double from Matt Priest to reclaim a 3-2 advantage.
The Bulldogs responded in the seventh inning, tying the game on a balk that allowed Zach Plasschaert to score before Pickett delivered again with an RBI single to give Fresno State a 4-3 lead.
The Cougars evened the score in the eighth on a sacrifice fly, setting up a decisive final frame.
In the ninth, Ethan Payne singled to spark the rally and was replaced by Barclay Ovalle, who stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Pickett came through once more with a go-ahead RBI single, scoring Ovalle for what proved to be the game-winning run.
On the mound, Jordan Haver (3-2) earned the win in relief, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing just one run while striking out four. Erik Rico started and went 4.1 innings, giving up three runs with four strikeouts.
Offensively, Pickett led the way with two hits and two RBIs, while Hewitt added a home run and two RBIs of his own. Fresno State finished with nine hits in the contest.
