Matt Phipps joined the Fresno State football staff for the 2021 season, and will serve his second year as the Bulldogs’ special team quality control assistant in 2022.
Phipps was with the UC Davis football staff in 2020, serving in the same role that he has with the Bulldogs. Prior to UC Davis, he spent the 2018-19 seasons as a linebackers coach at Butte College.
Before his coaching career, Phipps started his playing career at Butte College where he was a two-time letterman at outside and inside linebacker. He finished his playing career at Bemidji State (2012-13), members of the Minnesota-based Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. He led the Beavers' special teams unit in tackles as a junior, then earned a starting job as a senior, where he amassed another 47 stops in his final seasons.
Phipps remained at BSU to serve as a student assistant with the outside linebackers in 2014, and then three seasons (2015-17) as a running backs coach.
In 2015, Phipps received his social sciences degree with an emphasis in political science from Bemidji State.
