Last updated on July 8, 2015 Phil Earley, a 28-year coaching veteran, enters his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Fresno State football team. He was hired on Jan. 4, 2012 and coaches the tight ends and inside receivers. Earley was also the programs recruiting coordinator from 2012-13. Each year at the helm, Earley has guided a player who went on to garner all-conference recognition at the conclusion of the season at Fresno State. Most recently, true freshman tight end Chad Olsen was an honorable mention All-Mountain West selection in 2014, becoming the 11th true freshman to receive all-conference honors in MW history. Additionally, Olsen was named a freshman All-American by Sporting News. Olsen was the first Bulldog tight end to receive an All-American honor of any kind since 1988. Tight end Marcel Jensen was an honorable mention All-Mountain West pick in 2012 and a second-team honoree in 2013. Then slot receiver Isaiah Burse received honorable mention accolades both of those season. Burse caught 99 passes for 1,026 yards and six touchdowns during his senior season and closed out his career as Fresno State's all-time leader in all-purpose yardage and third in career receptions. Jensen would go on to become the first Bulldog tight end to be invited to the Senior Bowl in 2014 while Burse played in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. Earley has also been instrumental in putting together three strong recruiting classes for the Bulldogs, which included a 24-member 2012 class and a 22-member 2013 class that helped Fresno State build on its back-to-back Mountain West championships earned in 2012 and 2013. Earley came to Fresno State with experience from across the country in major conferences such as the Big East and SEC. Of his 28 years of experience, 17 of them have been spent coaching quarterbacks. Earley was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Idaho State in 2010 and the previous season he was an assistant to the offensive coordinator at San Diego State. From 2006-08, he served as the quarterbacks coach at Syracuse. During the 2005 season, Earley was an assistant to the quarterbacks coach at Auburn, helping the Tigers' unit that ranked 37th nationally in total offense and 30th in scoring offense. Auburn quarterback Brandon Cox finished that season with a 2,324-yard passing season, which ranked as the seventh-best season in school history. The 18 seasons prior to his stint at Auburn saw Earley gain experience working across the country, including his including his tenure at Washington State (1992-94) where he served as the recruiting coordinator and was responsible with helping head coach Mike Price with all football operations of the program. During that time, the Cougars won the 1992 Copper Bowl and led the Pac-10 in total offense. In 2004, Earley served as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Ohio when current Bulldog head coach Tim DeRuyter was the defensive coordinator for the Bobcats. From 2000-03, Earley served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Nevada and he held that same role in 1998-99 at Idaho. He was Idaho's quarterbacks coach in 1997 before being promoted to offensive coordinator the next year. While with the Wolf Pack, Earley's offense sported the nation's leading rusher in 2001 and the nation's leading receiver in 2002. Nevada finished 12th nationally in total offense (434 yards per game) and 11th in passing (296 yards per game) during the 2002 season. From 1994-96, Earley was the assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Cal Poly, where his offensive units set or tied 28 team record in his three years with the team. He got his start in coaching at Western Washington, where he served as the offensive line coach from 1986-87. From 1988-89, Earley held that same role at Weber State before moving back to Western Washington from 1989-91 to serve as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Vikings. Earley holds a bachelor's degree in education from Pacific Lutheran University (1980) and a master's degree in education from Western Washington (1988). He and his wife of 27 years, Cinde, have two sons, TJ (24) and Alec (21).
