Jackie Smith begins her third season as a member of the women’s basketball coaching staff at the University of Hartford. Smith’s hiring as an assistant coach in 2012 serves as a reunion for Smith, as she was a starting point guard for the Hawks under head coach Jennifer Rizzotti from 2007-11. Her responsibilities include recruiting, scouting, video editing and game-day preparations.
Prior to returning to her alma mater, Smith began her collegiate coaching career at Stonehill College, where she spent one season as an assistant coach. Recruiting, strength and conditioning, practice and game preparation and film editing were among her responsibilities during her time with the Skyhawks. In 2011-12, Stonehill finished with a 24-5 overall record with Smith’s assistance, including a 19-3 mark in the Northeast 10 Conference. In addition, the Skyhawks advanced to the NCAA Division II Regionals, before they came up short in the semifinal round of the national tournament.
During her collegiate career, Smith played an instrumental role in Hartford’s success, which was highlighted by a pair of America East Championships four postseason tournament appearances, three of which came in the NCAA Tournament. A two-time team captain, she also helped lead the Hawks to the program’s highest ranking (19th) in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll and two America East regular-season crowns.
Also highlighting Smith’s career were nods to the America East All-Conference Third Team and the All-Academic Team as a junior in 2009-10. A native of Westfield, Mass., Smith inked her name throughout Hartford’s record books as she finished her career ranked second in free throw percentage (.815), sixth in three-point field goals made (107), seventh in assists (292) and eighth in games played (122).
Smith, a 2011 graduate, received a Bachelor’s Degree in elementary and special education with a minor in sociology.Â
