Fresno - Considering the 90 degree temperature and crystal blue skies over Bulldog Stadium, there was a dark storm cloud over the Fresno State bench after a goal by Hornet Lisa Casey in the fifth minute of action with Sacramento State.
Entering Sunday afternoon?s match, the Bulldogs never had rallied from a deficit nor had they seized the opportunity to make a statement with a strong offensive game. Neither can be said anymore as the Bulldogs came from behind and ultimately took Sacramento State behind the woodshed for a 6-1 victory. The win moves the ?Dogs? current unbeaten streak to eight games ? the longest in the program?s history.
Lead ?Dog Jill Pearson struck first and often for Fresno State with her 10-yard shot finding net at the 8:57 mark. Pearson netted two more for her first career hat trick and the fourth in Fresno State women?s soccer history. The most recent hat trick was recorded by Cheryl Gano versus Portland State in 1996.
"I?m really proud of that," Pearson said. "I had been so close so many times. It?s a great feeling."
Aimee Thompson and Reyna Green also got into the scoring action with Thompson?s effort earning game-winning status in the 15th minute of action. Thompson flipped an eight-yard shot over Hornet keeper Kristy Milanese for the Bulldogs? first lead of the match.
Green found net twice ? both in the second half. Pearson hit Green with a lead pass to the right side where the midfielder simple centered herself and fired a 20-yard shot. Green?s second goal came in the 77th minute when working from the right corner fired a shot 10 yards from the endline to find net 25 yards away.
"This was a tremendous team effort," head coach Peter Reynaud said. "Jill [Pearson] had an excellent game, as well as the rest of the squad who put on a dominating performance."
The Bulldogs will see their next action Friday night when they confront traditional Western Athletic Conference power Southern Methodist at 8 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
