FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State Wrestling posted 36.50 points to finish 15th in the prestigious 47 team Cliff Keen Las Vegas Tournament in Primm, Nev.
Paris Ruiz (133 pounds, six seed at Las Vegas Tournament) captured back-to-back second place finishes (All-California Open, 133 pound-second place) by going 4-1. Ruiz opened with an impressive victory, as he defeated the Naval Academy?s Zane Sticked 13-1.
The 133-pound senior continued his winning ways by handing the tournament?s No. 3 seed, Dave Stoltz of Illinois, a technical fall loss (16-0, 6:33). In the quarterfinals, Ruiz was faced off against Oregon?s Brian Watson. The Oregon wrestler was just overmatched, as Ruiz won decisively 15-2. The semifinals saw Ruiz add another victory to his belt, as he beat Charles Walker (seventh seed in tournament) in a sudden death decision 3-1. Ruiz?s fairy tale journey ended in the finals, as he lost to the 133 pound bracket?s top seed Joe Warren of Michigan 6-3.
"Paris looked so dominating early in the tournament, I thought he was going to win the whole thing," said Fresno State?s Wrestling head coach Dennis DeLiddo.
Other notable Bulldogs at the tournament were Tim Cornish, as he reached the quarterfinals in the 157 pound bracket. Cornish fell just short, as he lost 5 to 4 to Oregon State?s Eric Jorgensen. Matt Demers put up three straight wins before being pinned by Carl Fronhofer of Pittsburg.
