ST. LOUIS - Fresno State 149-pound redshirt freshman Kyle Parco finished sixth at the 2021 NCAA Championships on Saturday at the Enterprise Center.
"It was pretty emotional after my high school coach passed away a month ago so that gave me a lot of motivation to do well and succeed in wrestling and I knew I was doing it for him. It was an emotional few days and I am still in a little bit of disbelief," Parco said on his tournament run and becoming an All-American.
After winning four matches in the consolation bracket on Friday and assuring himself of a top-six finish in the tournament, the Concord, Calif. native was back in action on Saturday morning with a pair of matches.
He got the morning started with a tough 8-0 major decision loss to No. 4 seed Boo Lewallen of Oklahoma State as the Cowboy sixth-year senior broke a scoreless tie after the first period to score four in the second period and added three more points and a riding time point in the third for the win.
The loss bumped Parco down to the fifth-place match where squared off with No. 3 seed Brock Mauller of Missouri. The Bulldog notched a pair of takedowns early to take a 4-1 lead, but an escape and a takedown by the Tiger tied the match at 4-4 after the first period. Mauller got away quickly to start the second and later added another takedown and riding time point for a 8-5 win.
Parco is the 23rd All-American in program history and first at the 149/150 lb. weight class since Terry Watts in 1994. He finishes his redshirt freshman season with a 19-4 overall record and Fresno State tied with North Dakota State for 35th place with 10.5 points.
