ST. LOUIS - Fresno State got its start at the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday at the Enterprise Center with a pair of wins.
Redshirt senior 141-pounder DJ Lloren and redshirt freshman 149-pounder Kyle Parco each went 1-1 on the day as each will look to stay alive in the consolation bracket on Friday.
Lloren, the No. 13 seed in the field, got the first session started with a tough 10-5 loss to No. 20 seed Brian Courtney of Virginia as he opened up with a 4-1 lead with a pair of first-period takedowns. After Courtney countered with an escape and a takedown for a 5-4 lead, Lloren started the third period with an escape to tie the match, but Courtney scored the final four points of the match and added a riding time point for a 10-5 win.
Parco got the 'Dogs their first win of the tournament with a 7-5 comeback win in sudden victory over No. 16 seed PJ Ogunsanya of Army. A pair of takedowns in the first period for Ogunsanya gave him a 4-1 lead, but Parco battled back with one escape in each of the second and third periods continuing to fight to secure a takedown with two seconds left in regulation to tie the match at 5-5. Forcing sudden victory, Parco clinched the win with a takedown 33 seconds into the extra session.
The evening session saw the 'Dogs again gain a split as Lloren notched an 11-3 major decision over No. 29 seed Chase Zollman of Wyoming using a six-point first period to build a sizeable lead and added two takedowns in the third period along with a riding time point for the victory.
Parco took on top-seeded and undefeated Sammy Sasso from Ohio State in the second round as he pushed the Buckeye sophomore to the end. Parco notched a takedown and two-point near fall in the final 12 seconds of the second period to take a 8-7 lead heading into the third. An escape put Parco up 9-7, but Sasso tied it up with a takedown. Parco was able to escape one more time, but Sasso finished a takedown with five seconds remaining in regulation for a narrow 11-10 win.
Session III gets started on Friday at 8 a.m. PT with the quarterfinals and consolation round on ESPNU.
