DENVER, Colo. - The Western Athletic Conference today released its 1999 all-WAC softball teams and postseason awards as selected by the leagues head coaches. Fresno State won all four of the WACs top individual awards as junior Angela Cervantez was named the WAC Player of the Year, junior Amanda Scott was named the Pitcher of the Year and Margie Wright along with New Mexico head coach Susan Craig were picked as the Co-Coaches of the Year. For the fourth year in a row, Fresno State had the WACs Freshman of the Year. This season, pitcher Kristen Hunter won the award. In 1996 Bulldog Lindsay Parker earned the honor, in 1997 Amanda Scott won the award and Becky Witt received the honor last season.
Cervantez, a first baseman from Madera, Calif. (Madera), led the WAC in batting average (.412), RBI (64), doubles (26), hits (80), was tied for third in triples (4) and was tied for fourth in runs scored (39) in all games. In WAC contests, she led the league in hitting (.466), RBI (26), doubles (10), on-base percentage (.523) and hits (34). She also ranked third in slugging percentage (.753). Cervantez ranks third all time in the WAC (all games) in doubles (45), sixth in base on balls (67) and eighth in RBI (115).
Scott, a junior righthander from Clovis, Calif. (Clovis HS), led the WAC with 24 wins (all games). She also led the league in conference games with a 0.33 ERA. She gave up only three earned runs and walked 12 while striking out 59 in 64.0 innings. Scott posted a perfect 9-0 mark in WAC competition and won the honor for the second straight season. At the plate, Scott hit .316 (61-for-193), scoring 45 runs and adding 45 RBI in all games. Scott ranks third all-time in the WAC (all games) in wins (68) and RBI (176), fourth in strikeouts (509), fifth in home runs (26), seventh in doubles (38) and eighth in runs (121).
Wright led Fresno State to a 57-8 record and the 1999 WAC regular-season championship with a perfect 24-0 mark in conference play. It marks the first time in WAC history that a team has finished league play with an undefeated record. It was Fresno States second straight WAC title and its third in the past four years. Wright has a career record of 879-288-3 (.753 - 20 years), and is 730-208-1 (.778) in 14 seasons with Fresno State. As the second all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I history, Wright also won the WAC Coach of the Year honors in 1996 and 1998.
Craig led New Mexico to a 42-12 overall record and a second-place tie in the WAC with a 14-7 mark. The Lobos are also ranked 20th in the nation, their first ranking since the 1994 season. The 42 wins are the most in school history. It marks the second award for Craig as she won the honor in 1992. In 23 seasons at the helm of New Mexico she has compiled a 580-473 (.551) record.
Hunter, a lefthander from Portland, Ore. (Westview HS), led the WAC with an 11-0 record in conference games and finished second with a 0.34 ERA. In all games, Hunter had a 23-5 record with a 0.63 ERA and struck out 187 batters, (7.79 per game) to finish second.
Fresno State led the conference with three players on the all-WAC first team. Hawaii and UNLV each placed two players while New Mexico, Colorado State and San Diego State each placed one. Two of the 10 first-team all-WAC performers from a year ago are repeat performers, including Fresno States Amanda Scott and Hawaiis Dana Degen.
Fresno State placed four players on the second team, followed by Utah and UNLV with two players. Colorado State, Tulsa and San Diego State each placed one player on the second team.
