Bulldog Wrestlers defeat Western State; lose to BYU

Provo, Utah - Fresno State picked up a win and a loss today in Provo, Utah. The Bulldogs first lost to BYU, 25-13, in the Dogs first Western Athletic Conference match-up of the season. The Bulldogs then defeated Western State, 24-21.
The Dogs dual meet record is now 4-5. They are 0-4 against ranked opponents, 4-2 on the road, and 0-1 in the WAC.
Picking up two technical fall victories in todays meets was sophomore Stephen Abas. Abas defeated BYUs Jose Enriquez, 22-7, and Western States Fred McCathron, 20-5, recording his fifth and sixth technical fall of the season. The second-ranked wrestler out of Hayward, Calif., is now 21-1 overall and 8-1 in dual meets.
TheDogs were also successful in the 197 pound matches today. Senior Demetrist Huff first defeated BYUs Brandon Ruiz, 6-4. And senior Donny Rider pinned his third opponent of the year when he defeated Western States Ryan Corn in 1:19. Huff improves to 14-6 overall and 5-2 in dual meets while Rider is now 11-5 overall and undefeated in dual meets with a record of 3-0.
Fresno native Jonte Davis (141) and junior Tim Cornish (157) were the only other Bulldogs to pick up wins in the BYU loss.
And in the Western State meet, Fresno native Paris Ruiz (133), sophomore Matt Demers (165) and sophomore Michael Mellor (174) won their matches to give the Dogs their fourth dual meet win of the year.
The Bulldogs will next wrestle at Cal Poly-SLO Friday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m.
