Fresno State Wrestling Team Ties Cal Poly, 17-17

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Five Bulldogs picked up wins in tonights dual meet tie (17-17) with the Cal Poly Mustangs in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Bulldogs are now 4-5-1 as the series record with the Mustangs goes to 11-26-1.
Getting things going for the Dogs after an 8-0 Cal Poly lead was senior Demetrist Huff (Upland, Calif.) who won the 197 pound match against Cal Polys Mike French. Huff is now 15-6 overall and 6-3 in dual meets.
Picking up his seventh technicall fall of the year was second-ranked wrestler Stephen Abas (Hayward, Calif.) who defeated Jaime Garza, 17-2. Abas improves to 22-1 overall and 9-1 in dual meet action. Abas will next travel to Stillwater, Okla., for the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Duals where the sophomore will take on top-ranked Teague Moore of Oklahoma State.
Junior Paris Ruiz won his match against Cal Polys Alberto Garza, 7-1. Ruiz is now 22-1 overall and 7-3 in dual meets. And improving to an overall record of 15-4 was junior Tim Cornish who defeated Cal Polys Marc Apodaca, 10-4. Cornish is now 7-2 in dual meets.
Tying the meet in the last match of the evening was sophomore Matt Demers. The Modesto native defeated Steve Strange in the last five seconds of the match when he got an escape and took down Strange with only five seconds on the clock giving the Dogs their first tie of the season. Demers improves to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in dual meets.
The Fresno State wrestling team returns to action Friday, Feb. 5, when the Dogs take on San Francisco State and Stanford. Results on Abas All-Star dual will be made available the night of Monday, Feb. 1.
