Three Bulldog Wrestlers Take First at the Aggie Open

Davis, Calif. - The Fresno State wrestling team had a successful road trip this weekend. After winning both of their dual meets against UC Davis and Columbia University yesterday, the Bulldogs today produced three champions, two second place finishers, one third place finisher and one fourth place finisher at the Aggie Open that concluded earlier this evening.
Sophomore Stephen Abas (125), redshirt freshman Ralph Lopez (141) and senior Demetrist Huff (197) all went 4-0 to win their championships in the two-day open tournament.
Abas defeated Ryan Escobar of Southern Oregon,15-4, to clinch the championship. Abas, ranked No. 2 in the nation, is now 18-1 overall.
Lopez defeated Casey Hunt of Portland State, 11-1, in the championship round improving his overall record to 6-2. Lopez will wrestle for the Dogs next year as a freshman.
Huff and teammate Donny Rider went head-to-head in the championship round of the 197 pound match that ended in overtime with Huff defeating Rider 2-1. Riders second place finish brought his overall record to 9-5. Huffs record improves to 15-5 overall.
Junior Tim Cornish took second in the 157 pound match after he lost to Beau Weiner of Stanford by a score 7-6 in the championship round. His tourney record was 3-1. Cornish improves to 16-2 overall.
Junior Paris Ruiz (133) placed third going 7-1 in the open tournament. Ruiz is now 19-7 overall. Senior Dave Wheeler took fourth in the heavyweight division.
The Dogs return to action Friday, Jan. 22, in a dual with Boise State in Boise, Idaho.
