STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Stephen Abas, the nation's No. 1-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, scored a pin in the opening match to lead Fresno State (6-5-1) to a hard-fought 25-14 win over Stanford (4-5) in Burnham Pavilion Friday night. The Bulldogs posted three wins in the final 16 seconds of matches to get back above .500 for the season. Fresno State also beat San Francisco State 40-3 earlier in the day.
There were several very tight bouts as both teams gear up for their conference championships. In the evening's second match at 133 pounds, Bulldog junior Paris Ruiz recorded the tying takedown with four seconds remaining. He then posted another takedown at 1:01 into overtime for the 8-6 sudden victory, handing Stanford junior Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central), ranked 14th nationally, his first loss since December. At 165 pounds, Bulldog sophomore Matt Demers turned a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 victory, getting a takedown with 16 seconds left. And at 174 pounds, Fresno State freshman Dan Jackson and Stanford senior Shane Cross (Douglas, WY/Douglas) were only able to muster one escape apiece through regulation and the two-minute overtime period. Jackson scored another escape in the second overtime for the tiebreaker victory, 2-1.
Cardinal senior Beau Weiner (Placerville, CA/Ponderosa) scored a 13-4 major decision at 157 pounds to help Stanford's cause, and win in his final home dual meet. Cross also was wrestling in his final home dual meet.
Both teams return to action Saturday at the All-Cal Invitational at San Francisco State. The Cardinal will be back in Burnham Pavilion for the Pac-10 Championships, Feb. 27-28.
