Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State sophomore wrestler
Abas, who won the national championship at 125 pound weight class in March, started the tour out by defeating Esmaicli Mohamed of France, 10-0. He then moved onto Poland where he won his first match, 11-3, against Marcin Chilinski. The two-time WAC Outstanding Wrestler completed his trip by pinning Tomasz Szczerek two minutes and one second into the match.
This winter Abas became the second Bulldog to claim a national championship in wrestling as he defeated Penn States Jeremy Hunter, 7-4. During the 1998-99 campaign he posted a 37-1 record with the second highest winning percentage (.974) in Fresno State history.
Next year Abas, a two-time All-American, will redshirt as he prepares for the 2000 Summer Olympics. When he joins the Bulldogs again in the fall of 2000 he will still have two years of eligibility remaining.
