Wrestling 'Dogs Win California Collegiate Invitational

San Francisco, Calif. - The Fresno State wrestling team took first at todays California Collegiate Wrestling Invitational in San Francisco, Calif., today with a total of 118.5 points as the Bulldogs had two wrestlers win their weight divisions.
Top-ranked Stephen Abas (Hayward, Calif.) went 3-0 today recording two technical falls and one pin as he won the 125 pound division. Abas now has recorded 10 technical falls, six major decisions and four pins in his 28-1 overall record.
Winning the 165 pound division was sophomore Matt Demers (Modesto, Calif.). Demers also went 3-0 scoring one major decision to win his title improving his overall record to 12-4.
Senior Donny Rider (Tres Pinos, Calif.) picked up the Most Pins in the Shortest Amount of Time honor after he pinned three of his opponents in the following times:1:36, 3:11 and :36. Rider placed third at the 197 pound division.
Junior Tim Cornish (Manhattan, N.Y.) took second at 157 pounds along with senior heavyweight Dave Wheeler (Cypress, Calif.). Junior Paris Ruiz placed third at 133 pounds. And Derrick Hayes (125), Jonte Davis (133), Dan Jackson (174) and Demetrist Huff (197) all placed fourth in the annual tournament.
The Bulldogs return home for their final two home meets of the season as they take on tenth-ranked Friday, Feb. 12, at the North Gym.
