Fresno, Calif. - Senior Quarterback Billy Volek is in full command of the 'Dogs in preseason camp... junior David Carr is redshirting ... Volek will be backed by sophomore Drew Johns (Bakersfield) and freshman Jeff Grady (Huntington Beach)... The Volek Watch: he finished the 1998 season with just three interceptions in 261 attempts, breaking the WAC record for lowest interception percentage (1.15) and ranked fifth in the league in total offense, averaging 177.7 yards per game ...in two years of action, Volek has thrown only nine interceptions (three in 1998) and had a string of 73 completed passes over four games ... with one more season to go, he ranks 10th on the Fresno State all-time total offense list and eighth on the career passing list with 3,709 career yards to date ... was the second highest rated quarterback in the conference and was 32nd in the nation ...in 1998, he passed for 1,995 yards ? the sixth most in the WAC ? and 14 touchdowns, while only throwing three interceptions.
Grady with an Edge on Johns Freshman Jeff Grady and sophomore Drew Johns continue to battle for the second spot behind Billy Volek, with Grady edging out Johns for the moment ... Johns, listed at 6-3, 195 lbs led Garces High in Bakersfield to a cumulative record of 20-6 ... he completed 99 of 182 passes for 1,845 yards and 15 TDs ... he redshirted last season and sat out the '97 season fulfilling academic requirements ... Grady, who also redshirted last season, played at Edison High in Huntington Beach ... he passed for over 1,500 yards, completed 59 percent of his passes and threw 10 touchdowns as a senior.
