FRESNO, Calif. - In the second dual match of the day: the Bulldogs dropped to 5-3, as the sixth rated Illinois Fighting Illini handed Fresno State a one-sided loss 39-6.
No. 7 Paris Ruiz (Jr., Fresno, Calif.) and Tim Cornish (Sr., Manhattan, N.Y.) delivered Fresno State the only two wins of the match. Ruiz was slotted against the 18th ranked wrestler in the nation, Dave Stoltz. Both combatants played each other to the best, as they posted a scoreless first period. Stoltz got the first points of the match with an escape, but that was it, as Ruiz dominated the rest of the match scoring the last six points. In a quick substitution by the Illini, Cornish ended up wrestling against an up-in-coming Illinois freshman Ryan Berger. The Fresno State senior got two quick points with a takedown in the first period, but after that, scoring proved to be difficult against the limber freshman.
The ?Dogs will be travelling to Portland, Ore. and Eugene, Ore. for a Jan. 21 tripleheader against Portland at 10 a.m., Central Washington at noon and quick jaunt to the University of Oregon for a 7:30 p.m. match up against the Ducks.
