No. 21 Boise State Saddles Fresno State with First Home Loss
The Bulldogs go toe to toe with the No. 21 Boise State Broncos but end up running out of gas, as the Broncos win the last two matches en route to a 21-15 victory. Fresno State?s 174 pound wrestler Dan Jackson (So., Visalia, Calif.) started off the dual match with an impressive technical fall win over Jon Terry 23-7, that gave the ?Dogs a 5-0 team lead. The next match featured Bulldog Jason Rossotti (Jr., Selma, Calif.), as he extended the team lead to 8-0 with a close victory over Cash Edwards 10-6 despite a bruised shoulder. No. 7 Paris Ruiz (Sr., Fresno, Calif.) and Darrick Duran (So., Fresno, Calif.) helped the ?Dogs cause with one win apiece, but the charging Broncos would not be denied as they came from behind to defeat the ?Dogs.
Bulldog Wrestling Holds Off The Cougars
Fresno State improved their dual match record to 4-2, but just barely, as the Brigham Young Cougars made it a close contest 19-11 at North Gym on the campus of Fresno State. The Bulldogs opened up with three straight victories as Ralph Lopez (Fr., Fresno, Calif.) defeated Jose Enriquez 17-6 for his fifth major decision win of the season. Darrick Duran (So., Fresno, Calif.) upended Chris Risenmay 10-8 and Tim Cornish (Sr., Manhattan, N.Y.) squeaked by Rocky Smart 5-2. Dan Jackson (So., Kingsburg, Calif.), Jason Rossotti (Jr., Selma, Calif.) and Tom Gohde (Jr., Bozeman, Mont.) added to the Bulldogs team scoring ledger with one win apiece. No. 7 Paris Ruiz (Jr., Fresno, Calif.) and No. 4 Aaron Holker had the last and best match of the night, as both these nationally ranked wrestlers put on a show for the crowd. Holker halted Ruiz?s nine match win streak with a 8-7 victory.
Fresno State Wrestling Rubs The Gators With A Loss
The Bulldogs euphemistically flipped the San Francisco State Gators on their backs and charmed them into a 28-6 defeat at the North Gym on the campus of Fresno State. Fresno State started the dual match with three straight wins, as Jason Bedsole (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) squeaked by John Hammer 8-7 for his 11th win of the season. No. 7 Paris Ruiz (Jr., Fresno, Calif.) got on track with a major decision victory over Armando Orozco 8-0, that puts Ruiz overall at 19-3 (8 major decision wins). The next match featured Ralph Lopez (Fr., Fresno, Calif.) and not to be overshadowed by Ruiz?s impressive victory, he got a first period pin of Jared Waller. The Bulldogs kept the pressure on the Gators by collecting five more wins during the dual match. No. 6 Illinois would be the next target for the ?Dogs, as Fresno State hosted both San Francisco State and the powerful Illini team on the same day. The ?Dogs improved their dual match record to 5-2, as the Gators went the opposite way going 2-5.
No. 6 Illinois On The Warpath Against Fresno State Wrestling
In the second dual match of the day: the Bulldogs dropped to 5-3, as the sixth rated Illinois Fighting Illini handed Fresno State a one-sided loss 39-6. No. 7 Paris Ruiz (Jr., Fresno, Calif.) and Tim Cornish (Sr., Manhattan, N.Y.) delivered Fresno State the only two wins of the match. Ruiz was slotted against the 18th ranked wrestler in the nation, Dave Stoltz. Both combatants played each other to the best, as they posted a scoreless first period. Stoltz got the first points of the match with an escape, but that was it, as Ruiz dominated the rest of the match scoring the last six points. In a quick substitution by the Illini, Cornish ended up wrestling against an up-in-coming Illinois freshman Ryan Berger. The Fresno State senior got two quick points with a takedown in the first period, but after that, scoring proved to be difficult against the limber freshman.
