Wrestlers Lose to Oklahoma State in First Home Match

FRESNO, Calif. - The 20th ranked Bulldogs lost to No. 1 Oklahoma State (38-7) at a sold out Fresno State North Gym. Fresno State suffered three pins and a forfeit in the last four matches.
The first match wrestled of the evening was in the heavyweight division, which Oklahoma State took. No. 16 James Huml of Oklahoma State won by major decision over Tom Gohde of Fresno State, who wrestled up a division.
At the 125 division, No. 1 Stephen Abas wrestled Matt Brown of Oklahoma State, and won by major decision (13-5), tying the team score at 4-4. No. 14 Derrick Hayes of Fresno State wrestled against Johnny Thompson of Oklahoma State in the 133 division. Thompson won by decision after a close match where both wrestlers took leads.
No. 15 Ralph Lopez matched up with No. 9 Jerrod Sanders in the 141 division. Sanders won by decision, extending the Cowboys lead to 10-4. In the 149 division, Jim Medeiros of Fresno State wrestled No. 4 Reggie Wright, who won by major decision (13-4).
Nathan Vasquez, ranked 13th, upset 12th ranked Shane Roller in what would be the Bulldog's last scoring match. In a controversial third period, Vasquez jumped ahead on a reversal, takedown, and nearfall, winning 11-7. However, the victory for the `Dogs only closed the gap (14-7) to seven points.
Darrick Duran of Fresno State wrestled up a division to face No. 6 Ty Wilcox in the 165 division. Wilcox racked up points with two three-point nearfalls, one in the first period and one in the third, and finially pinned Duran with 21 seconds left. In the 174 division, Mike Mellor of Fresno State wrestled No. 18 Tyrone Lewis, and was pinned in 34 seconds.
Jason Rossotti wrestled No. 9 Daniel Cormier of Oklahoma State and was pinned in 2 minutes and 38 seconds. The `Dogs then forfeited the 197 division, putting the final score at 38-7. The victory for the Cowboys puts them at 5-0 in dual matches, while the Bulldogs are now 0-1.
