Bulldogs Face Iowa in Next Action

FRESNO, Calif. - BULLDOGS HOST IOWA AT CLOVIS HIGH SCHOOL Fresno State's next dual meet is against Iowa. The meet will be held at Clovis High School's South Gymnasium. Iowa won the NCAA tournament last year and has five returning All-Americans: Jody Strittmatter (125), Eric Juergens (133) also a national champion, Doug Schwab (141), Mike Zadick (149) and T.J. Williams (157). Matches to watch will be between No. 1 Stephen Abas of Fresno State and Jody Strittmatter in the 125 division, and No. 13 Nathan Vasquez of Fresno State and T.J. Williams in the 157 division. Iowa is coached by Jim Zalesky, who in three years of coaching has compiled a record of 44-7. Last year the Hawkeyes went 18-0. Fresno State is 0-1 all-time against Iowa.
`DOGS LOSE TO NO. 2 OKLAHOMA STATE 38-7 Fresno State won two matches during Sunday night's event, scoring seven points to the Cowboy's 38. The first win came from junior Stephen Abas (Hayward, Calif.)(125), who won by major decision over Oklahoma's Matt Brown. The other win for the Bulldogs came from senior Nathan Vasquez (Bakersfield, Calif.) in the 157 division. Vasquez, ranked No. 13, beat Shane Roller, ranked No. 12, by decision (11-7). The Cowboys had falls in the 165, 174 and 184 divisions. Oklahoma State improved to 14-0 all-time against the `Dogs. Fresno State's record is now 1-1.

BULLDOGS IMPROVE FROM 15TH TO 9TH AT LAS VEGAS INVITE Fresno State placed inthe top 10 at the Las Vegas Invitational, improving upon last year's 15th place finish. The Fresno State wrestling team placed 9th at the Las Vegas Invitational with 70.5 points Sat., Dec. 1-2, 2000. The Bulldogs scored higher than 43 of the teams participating in the tournament, including seven schools they will face in dual meets this season. Arizona State, Oregon and Boise State were the only schools they will later wrestle that placed higher than the `Dogs. Stephen Abas placed first in the 125 division, Derrick Hayes (Seaside, Calif.) placed fifth in the 133 division, Nathan Vasquez placed sixth in the 157 division and Eddie Gifford (Las Vegas, Nev.)placed eighth in the 165 division. Abas was seeded first going in to the tournament and went 5-0 to earn the title. He defeated A.J. Grant of Michigan by decision (10-2) in the final round. Hayes, seeded ninth, went 3-0 before losing to Brian Watson from Oregon by decision (6-4) in the semi-final round. Hayes was then defeated by Rad Martinez from Clarion, putting him in fifth place. Vasquez, seeded seventh, went 3-0 before Bryan Snyder of Nebraska, second seed, won by decision in the fourth round. Vasquez went 1-1 in the consolation rounds to place sixth. Gifford was seeded tenth and went 3-0 before a loss to second seed Chris Martin of Virginia.
