ATLANTA - Georgia Tech had four players in double figures, including Sonja Mallory's game-high 25, on its way to a 87-56 victory over Fresno State in the championship game of the Georgia Tech/Atlanta Northwest Marriott Holiday Classic. The game was FS's final non-conference game of the regular season and drops its record to 4-8. The Yellow Jackets improve to 8-3.
The Bulldogs undoing came in the form of poor shooting and turnovers. Fresno State shot only 42 percent from the floor, including a paltry 33 percent in the second half. The team also committed 23 turnovers. Conversely, Georgia Tech shot 48 percent and committed a season-low 13 turnovers.
The Yellow Jackets, a WNIT participant a year ago, went on a 20-7 run at the 15-minute mark of the first half to bust the game open, taking a 32-18 lead with 6:34 to go. GT increased its advantage to 47-30 by the end of the opening stanza, the most points Fresno State has given up in a first half this season.
The second half didn't go much better for the Bulldogs. Ten minutes into the second stanza, Georgia Tech had built a 20-point lead. Fresno State got no closer than that the rest of the game.
Fresno State was led by Tiffany Simon's 16 points and six rebounds. Lindsay Logan added 15, the 12th time in 12 games she has scored in double figures. For her efforts, Logan was named to the all-tournament team, meaning she earned such honors in all three non-conference tournaments in which the Bulldogs particpated.
The Ramblin' Wreck was paced by Mallory, who in addition to her 25 points posted a game-high eight rebounds. She was named tournament MVP. Also scoring in double figures for Tech was Milli Martinez (13), Niesha Butler (13) and Jaime Kruppa (11). The trio also received all-tournament honors.
Next up for Fresno State is the WAC opener against Rice on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the North Gym.
