FRESNO, Calif. - After going 2-1 in its longest conference homestand of the year, Fresno State (10-12, 3-5 WAC) heads back on the road for two games this week. The Bulldogs will take on SMU on Thursday at 5 p.m. PST before playing TCU on Saturday at 5 p.m. PST.
LOGAN TAKES ROUND TWO
The WAC's three best freshman were on the court together when UTEP took on Fresno State on Saturday. It was only the second time the Miners' Heidi Walker and Amy Pack and the Bulldogs' Lindsay Logan were in the same gym together for only the second time this year. In the first meeting on Jan. 15, Pack scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead UTEP to an overtime victory. In that contest, Walker did not play due to injury while Logan scored 10 points and had two assists, her season low. But in the rematch, it was all Logan. The WAC Freshman of the Year favorite scored 14 points and added to her WAC-leading assist total by dishing out eight in the Bulldogs' 57-47 victory. She also had four steals and a blocked shot. Pack finished with 12 points, eight of which came in the closing minutes after FS had built an insurmountable lead. Walker added only eight.
FINISHING WITH A FLOURISH
Lindsay Logan has saved her best for the second half of the season. In the last four games, Logan has posted assist totals of six, nine, eight and eight, good for an average of 7.75 per contest. In that span, she increased her per game assist average to 6.50 to 6.73. She has led the WAC in assists the entire season and is trying to become the first freshman in conference history to win the assist title.
SHE DID IT ALL
Tiffany Lewis put on perhaps her most impressive performance of the season in FS's victory over UTEP. The team's lone senior scored a game-high 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds, made five steals and dished out two assists. But in addition to her offensive exploits, Lewis also helped shut down UTEP's Amy Pack, who scored 30 points against Fresno State in the previous meeting. This time, Pack scored only 12 points, eight of which came in the final five minutes of the game.
SCOUTING SMU
SMU will come into Thursday's game with a 15-6 (8-1 WAC) record after splitting its two games last week. For the first time since Dec. 28, the Mustangs will be coming into a game off a loss. SMU had its 12-game winning streak snapped in Saturday's 63-51 loss at Hawai'i. The Mustangs, who have made the NCAA Tournament in five of the past six years, were picked to finish second in the preseason coaches' poll. D-dra Rucker, who scored 20 points in the last meeting with FS, leads SMU with a 15.4 per game scoring average. Karlin Kennedy, the Mustangs' all-time leading scorer, chips in a 15.0 average and a team leading 8.7 rebounds per game, a number good for second in the WAC. Rhonda Rompola is in her ninth year in charge of the Mustangs, having posted a 170-88 SMU and career record.
ALL-TIME vs. SMU
SMU leads the all-time series between the two schools 3-0, including the Mustangs' 86-50 victory over Fresno State on Jan. 22 in the North Gym. The Bulldogs are 0-1 against SMU in Dallas.
SMU RECENT ACTION
The Mustangs split their two road games last week, defeating San Jose State 71-44 prior to falling to Hawai'i 63-51. Against the Spartans, SMU received a balanced scoring attack to pave the road to victory. Eight Mustangs played 14 minutes or more while five scored nine or more points, led by D-dra Rucker, who had 13. SMU led by only five at halftime but limited the San Jose State to only 12 points in the second half. SMU's 12-game winning streak came to a close at Hawai'i in a battle for conference supremacy. The Mustangs were outscored 39-26 in the second half while Hawai'i was 27 of 32 from the line, compared to SMU's 9 of 10. Anika Calvert and Katie Remke led the Mustangs with 11 points.
LAST TIME vs. SMU
Fresno State will care to remember the first half when looking at SMU film this week. The Bulldogs trailed by only nine after the opening 20 minutes and were holding Mustangs' star guard D-dra Rucker in check. However, SMU exploded in the second half, going on a 30-4 run in one 10-minute stretch to beat Fresno State 86-50. Amanda Baker had 16 points for FS in the loss.
SCOUTING TCU
The Horned Frogs enter this week with a 13-12 (4-6 WAC) record after splitting their two games last week. TCU comes at teams with a balanced scoring attack, with Diamond Jackson leading the way with a 13.2 average. Tricia Payne adds 10.7 per game. The Horned Frogs have been forced to fill the void left by Amy Sutton, who fractured her fibula against Hawai'i on Jan. 15 and is expected to miss at least two more weeks. First-year coach Jeff Mittie leads the Horned Frogs. He has a 164-72 career mark.
ALL-TIME vs. TCU
Fresno State leads the all-time series 4-1, with all four wins having come in Fresno. The Bulldogs only game at TCU came on Feb. 5, 1998, a 66-60 Horned Frogs victory.
TCU RECENT ACTION
TCU split its two road games last weekend, falling to Hawai'i 72-56 prior to beating San Jose State 66-51. Against the Rainbow Wahine, Diamond Jackson scored 21 points, but it wasn't enough as the Horned Frogs shot only 37 percent from the floor. The results were much better against San Jose State, which TCU limited to only 27 percent shooting in its victory.
LAST TIME VS. TCU
It was the Lindsay Logan Show the last time TCU and Fresno State met up. The freshman had a career-high 33 points on 12 of 17 shooting, one of which was a 60-foot heave at the end of the first half. Logan also added six assists, four rebounds and two steals in the victory. The Bulldogs shot 54 percent from the floor.
FRESNO STATE LAST WEEK
Fresno State defeated its travel partner UTEP last week 57-47 for its second win in three games. Tiffany Lewis led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds. Lindsay Logan added 14 points and eight assists. The Bulldogs, who trailed by five at halftime, outscored the Miners 39-24 in the second half. Amanda Baker added 10 points in the victory.
OH, NO YOU DON'T
The UTEP game marked the second consecutive contest in which the Bulldogs shut down the opposition's main offensive threat. Against Hawai'i, FS thwarted Raylene Howard, the WAC's leading scorer and the 1998-99 WAC Pacific Division Player of the Year. Howard only mustered 10 points and turned the ball over 10 times in the Rainbow Wahine's narrow 48-44 victory. The trend continued against UTEP, where Fresno State allowed Heidi Walker and Amy Pack, the WAC's second and third-leading scorer, respectively, only 16 points combined until five minutes remained in the contest. At that point, the score was 49-31 and the game no longer in doubt. Pack ended up with 12, eight of which came in the final five minutes, while Walker ended with only eight. The Bulldogs will take on the WAC's fourth (D-dra Rucker) and sixth (Karlin Kennedy) leading scorers Thursday against SMU.
LEWIS IN THE RECORD BOOK
Tiffany Lewis had seven rebounds against UTEP and continues to close in on career and single-season records. She is only 52 boards shy of passing Careana Clay (1981-84) to move into sixth place on the career rebounds list. Lewis is entrenched in third place on the career rebound average list and looks as if she will finish her Bulldog career in that position. The senior is also posing a threat to the Fresno State single-season rebound mark of 287, held by Janee Young. Lewis, who has 215 so far this year, will have to average 10.3 boards per game the rest of the season to break that mark. She is currently pulling down a WAC-best 9.8 per game. Should she win the conference rebounding title, she would become the fourth Bulldog in a row to do so, following Janee Young (1996-97 and 1997-98) and her own title last year. Lewis is also closing in on the top 10 in career field goals and already rests in eighth in career field goal percentage. Following is where Lewis stands on Fresno State's rebounding and field goal record lists:

GIMME THAT
Tiffany Lewis is even poised to etch her name into an area of the Fresno State record books not related to rebounding or field goals. She currently has 67 steals on the season and has moved into eighth place on the single-season steals list. Should her average of 3.05 steals per game continue, Lewis would end up with 88, the second-highest single-season total in Fresno State history. She is also on the cusp of moving into the top 10 in career steals. Lewis currently has 148 in her career, just one shy of Shannan McGee (1984-87), who rests in 10th place.
LOGAN TO MAKE HISTORY IN THE NORTH GYM?
Lindsay Logan seems all but a lock to put in the single greatest assist season in Fresno State history this year. The freshman is currently seventh on the single-season list and, barring a catastrophe, should break the mark in the North Gym against either Tulsa on Feb. 24 or Rice on Feb. 26. Logan, who has 150 assists this year, needs only to average 2.86 per game the rest of the year set the record. She currently leads the WAC with a 6.81 per game average. Logan is the only freshman in program history to compile one of the 10 best single-season assist marks and should move up to fifth should she reach her average assist total against SMU on Thursday. Even more amazing is that Logan has assaulted the record book through only 22 games, far less than any other player in the top 10. Following is where Logan ranks on the Fresno State single-season assist list:

If you've attended every Fresno State game this year, then you've heard that announcement prior to every contest. Logan is the only Bulldog to have started in every game and also leads the team in minutes, averaging a WAC-best 37.1 per game. She recently played in 215 consecutive minutes and in five games in a row. Logan has gone the distance in seven games this year and played 38 against UTEP on Saturday.
LOGAN AT HOME IN THE NORTH GYM
Lindsay Logan has been impressive everywhere she has played this year, but she has excelled at the North Gym. Logan has a 7.7 average in home games this season, including three of her four double-digit assist games.
LONE STAR GOOSE EGG
Should Fresno State win a game on the upcoming road trip to SMU and TCU, it would make history. The Bulldogs have never won a game in Texas, losing 12 consecutive contests, including two earlier this year at UTEP and Rice. FS is 0-6 at UTEP, 0-3 at Rice, 0-1 at TCU, 0-1 at SMU and 0-1 at Texas Tech. The upcoming trip will be the final of the year to the Lone Star State.
VICTORY ECLIPSING WIN TOTAL
The 57-47 win over UTEP gave Fresno State its 10th victory of the season, passing last year's win total of nine. The Bulldogs have six more games to increase their current victory total. FS hasn't had more than 12 wins in a season since the 1996-97 season, when it won 14. That was also the last season Fresno State had a winning record.
GARCIA IMPROVING
Laura Garcia's rough three weeks appear to be behind her. The freshman guard suffered a sprained left ankle in practice on Jan. 17 and missed the 83-75 victory over TCU on Jan. 20. She returned against SMU in limited duty but reaggravated the injury at Rice on Jan. 27. Just as the injury was beginning to heal, she sprained her right ankle in practice on Feb. 2, the day before FS was to play San Jose State. Despite her travails, Garcia has missed only one game and has played solidly, including a 25-minute effort against UTEP on Saturday. She will play this week at SMU and TCU.
THE WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE COMING
For the first time ever, Fresno State is hosting the Western Athletic Conference men's and women's basketball tournament March 8-11. Eight men's and eight women's teams will invade Selland Arena to determine the best in the conference. Ticket information may be obtained by calling the Fresno State Athletics Ticket Office at (559) 278-DOGS.
