Wrestling Beats Cal Poly on the Road 20-17

FRESNO, Calif. - The meet between No. 25 Fresno State and Cal Poly was as close as it gets. It came right down to the last match, which was between Fresno State's Ralph Lopez and Cal Poly's Andrew Gharst in the 141 division. Fresno State and Cal Poly were tied 17-17 going into the match which Lopez won by decision 8-4.
Cal Poly took an early lead when Cedric Haymon (149) decisioned Jim Medeiros. The 'Dogs came back with No. 15 Nathan Vasquez's technical fall over Josh Blagg. Vasquez earned two three-point near falls before the match was complete. Fresno State's Eddie Gifford (165) won by decision over Brody Barrios 3-1, putting the Bulldogs in the lead 8-3.
Things took a turn for the worst for Fresno State when the Mustangs won three matches in a row. Steve Strange teched Fresno State's Mike Mellor in the 174 division. Then Chuck Sandlin beat Jason Rossotti by decision and David Schenk beat Tom Gohde by decision. Cal Poly led 14-8 with four matches to go in the meet.
In the heavyweight division, Fresno State's No. 3 Billy Blunt stepped it up for the 'Dogs, winning by major decision over Dan Leahy. No. 1 Stephen Abas teched Cal Poly's Jamie Garza in 5 minutes and 51 seconds. With two matches remaining, Fresno State once again led 17-14.
With the meets biggest upset, Cal Poly's Nate Ybarra won by decision over Fresno State's Derrick Hayes, ranked 16th in the nation. Ybarra tied the team scores at 17 going into the final match, which Lopez won for the Bulldogs' victory.
Fresno State is 3-4 in dual meets for the season while Cal Poly is 1-3. The Bulldogs' next meet is against No. 6 Oklahoma, Sun., Jan. 14 at Fresno State's North Gym.
