No. 22 Wrestling Upsets 14th-Ranked Oregon 21-14

FRESNO, Calif. - The 22nd ranked Bulldogs dominated from the beginning against 14th ranked Oregon in Fresno State's best wrestled match of the season. The `Dogs won the first three and last three, leaving little room for the Ducks to score. Fresno State moves up to 6-5 while Oregon falls to 7-5 on the season.
In the 149 division, Fresno State's Jim Medeiros got the first win of the meet with a 7-5 decision over Oregon's Tony Overstake. No. 15 Nathan Vasquez picked up another win for the 'Dogs, defeating No. 19 Eugene Harris 4-1 in the 157 division.
Eddie Gifford won the third consecutive match for Fresno State with a 12-6 decision over Leif Williams at 165 pounds. In the 174 division, Fresno State's Mike Mellor was up 3-1 going into the third period, but Oregon's Luke Larwin scored seven uncontested points and won the Ducks' first match of the meet.
Fresno State lost the 184 and 197 divisions as Jason Rossotti fell to No. 6 Jason Lee 18-6 and Tom Gohde lost to Oregon's No. 6 Chael Sonnen 9-2.
Oregon's heavyweight division wrestler, No. 5 Eric Webb, upset Fresno State's No. 2 Billy Blunt with a 3-2 decision. The victory put the Ducks in the lead 14-9.
No. 5 Shaun Williams of Oregon forfeited his match against No. 1 Stephen Abas at 125 pounds. In the second upset of the evening, Fresno State's No. 15 Derrick Hayes pulled out a reversal in the last 10 seconds of the match, beating No. 10 Brian Watson 4-3 and putting the 'Dogs ahead 18-14.
At the 141 weight class, Fresno State's Ralph Lopez beat Casey Hunt of Oregon in a close match. Lopez and Hunt were tied at the end of three periods, but Lopez got the win with 2 minutes of riding time.
Fresno State will host two meets Sunday, Jan. 28. The first meet is against Portland State at 5:30 and the second is against No. 17 Arizona State at 7:00.
