BULLDOGS TAKE ROAD TRIP TO BAY AREA
The Bulldogs go on the road to face San Francisco State and Stanford Friday, Feb. 2, and than will stay for the All-California Tournament on Feb. 3. San Francisco State has a 3-4 record, as Fresno State will be its toughest opponent yet. Stanford is 3-7 on the season and 0-5 in the Pac 10. Fresno State leads the all-time series against San Francisco State at 24-11. The last time the two teams met was Jan. 16, 2000 at Fresno State where the `Dogs won the meet 28-6. The Bulldogs have never lost to Stanford in 31 meets. Fresno State has a 30-0-1 all-time record against Stanford. Last year the `Dogs beat Stanford 30-3 on February 12, at Clovis High School.
`DOGS LOSE TO NO. 17 ARIZONA STATE 24-14
Fresno State jumped out to a 11-0 lead against the Sun Devils with two decisions and a technical fall in the first three matches of the meet. Tom Gohde (197) beat Andy Swanson 4-1 and No. 2 Billy Blunt (Hwt) followed up with a 5-3 decision over No. 12 Kellan Fluckinger. No. 1 Stephen Abas finished off Chris Knox in the 125 division in 5 minutes and 9 seconds. Arizona State won the next six out of seven matches, to beat the Bulldogs 24-14. Fresno State's other win came from No. 15 Nathan Vasquez who upset No. 10 Rocky Smart by a 4-0 decision.
FRESNO STATE BEATS PORTLAND STATE
The Bulldogs won seven matches against the Vikings, the first six out of seven belonging to the `Dogs. Gohde decisioned Randy Davidson in the 197 division, Blunt pinned Joe Johnson in the Hwt. division and Abas teched No. 19 John Fasana in the 125 division to round out the first three matches. Then Ben Martinez major decisioned James Pereira 13-5 in the 133 division, Lopez's match was forfeited and Jim Medeiros majored Ryan Thomas 11-2. The last Bulldog win came from Eddie Gifford with a major decision over Rohan Theobold in the 165 division. Fresno State won the meet 32-15.
BULLDOGS UPSET NO. 14 OREGON
Fresno State won the first and last three matches against the Ducks, winning the meet 21-14. Jim Medeiros won the first match for the `Dogs, beating Tony Overstake 7-5. Next, Vasquez decisioned No. 19 Eugene Harris 4-1 and Eddie Gifford beat Leif Williams 12-6 as the Bulldogs jumped to a 9-0 lead. Fresno State lost the next four, but came back strong in the 133 division with Hayes' 4-3 upset over No. 10 Brian Watson. Ralph Lopez got the last win with a decision over Casey Hunt 11-10.
UC DAVIS FALLS TO FRESNO STATE 21-15
The Bulldogs beat the Aggies on the road Friday, Jan. 26. Fresno State captured five wins on the meet, four decisions and one pin. Bulldog winners included Vasquez, Jason Rossotti, Blunt, Abas, Hayes and Lopez.
WRESTLERS AT THE HEAD OF THE CLASS
Two Bulldog wrestlers made the Dean's List for the Fall 2000 semester. Sophomore Eddie Gifford had a 3.82 GPA. Gifford, who is a starter at the 165 weight class, has not declared a major. Junior Justin McLelland, who transfered from Fresno City College in the Spring 2000 semester, had a 3.85 GPA. McLelland wrestles in the 125 division and his major is Kinesology.
