Wrestling Wins One and Loses Two at Lone Star Duals

FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs won one and lost two meets in Dallas, Texas, at the Lone Star Duals. Fresno State captured its second dual meet win, beating Northern Illinois, but then lost to No. 24 Northern Iowa and No. 4 Iowa State 25-10 and 30-15. The `Dogs are now 2-4 in dual meets. No. 1 Stephen Abas went 3-0 with a pin, major decision and an injury default. No. 2 Billy Blunt went 2-1 with wins coming from a pin and a decision. His only loss was to Paul Hynek from Northern Iowa who won by a 5-4 decision.
Fresno State's came out strong in its first meet, against Northern Illinois. Abas opened up the action with a pin over Marlon Felton in 4:01. Next up Derrick Hayes gained momentum, pinning Alexis Rivera in 2:39. Ralph Lopez (141) couldn't keep the fire burning, however, losing to Ryan Egan 10-4. Jim Medeiros picked up a decision for the `Dogs, beating Jamie Hey 6-4. No. 13 Nathen Vasquez wrestled No. 14 Scott Owen in a close match, but lost 10-9. In the 165 division, Eddie Gifford beat Bryce Hasseman by a 12-6 decision. Darrick Duran and Jason Rossotti lost their matches by major decision and major decision. Blunt finished off the meet on a good note for the `Dogs with the fastest fall of the meet. Blunt pinned John Lovrich in 1:19. Fresno State won 27-13.
Next, the Bulldogs faced off against No. 24 Northern Iowa. Fresno State had three wins by Abas, Hayes and Vasquez. Abas nearleh teched Eric Dunmire, winning with a19-5 major decision. Hayes beat Chad Bordreau by 10-8 decision and Vasquez decisioned Drew Kelly 10-6. Freson State lost 25-10.
In the Bulldogs' last meet of the day, they faced their toughest team yet. Fresno State lost to No. 4 Iowa State 30-15. Iowa State benefited from two pins early on in the meet, and didn't look back winning seven out of the ten matches. The `Dogs picked up points when Iowa State injury defaulted in the 125 division, defaulted the 157 division and Blunt won by decision over Mark Knauer.
Fresno State heads to Cal Poly Jan. 12 for its seventh dual meet of the season.
