Blue Team Wins Wrestling Intersquad

FRESNO, Calif. - The Blue beat the Red team 16-6 in Fresno State's Red v. Blue scrimmage Wednesday.
The first match in the seven-match event was between Red team's Britt Mooney (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Blue team's Eddie Gifford (Las Vegas, Nev.). Gifford, a junior 165 division wrestler, beat Mooney, a freshman 174 pounder, 6-5.
Redshirt-freshman and transfer from Tennessee Chattanooga, Joey Guiler (Suwanee, Ga.), (Blue) lost to senior Justin McLelland (Atwater, Calif.) (Red) by a 3-1 decision. Guiler and McLelland both wrestle in the 125 division.
Senior Derrick Hayes (Seaside, Calif.) (Blue) beat sophomore Ben Martinez (Pixley, Calif.) (Red) 5-2 in the third match. Martinez wrestles behind Hayes in the 133 division.
In a 157 pound wrestle-off, Fresno City College transfer Ben Baca (Clovis, Calif.) (Blue) beat senior Darrick Duran (Fresno, Calif.) (Red) 8-3. Baca wrestled at Buchanan High School where he graduated in 1998.
In the only major decision victory of the scrimmage, junior Ralph Lopez (Fresno, Calif.) (Blue) beat senior Cal State Fullerton transfer John Blalock (Temecula, Calif.) 14-5. Lopez is the starting wrestler in the 141 division.
Freshman Sean Sheets (Bakersfield, Calif.) (Blue) couldn't score on sophomore Cal State Fullerton transfer Brian Spalliero (Grass Valley, Calif.) (Red) in the sixth match. Spalliero, a 157 division wrestler, beat Sheets, a 165 division wrestler, 3-0.
Mooney wrestled a second match in the scrimmage, this one against redshirt-freshman Landon Seefeldt (Modesto, Calif.). Seefeldt, who will be a starter at 184 pounds, beat Mooney by a 5-3 decision.
Senior Stephen Abas (Hayward, Calif.) did not wrestle in the scrimmage because he is in Colorado Springs, Colo., training for the World Championships. He will return tomorrow and wrestle in Fresno State's home opener against Menlo College and Navy on Saturday at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.
