No. 20 Wrestling Edges Wyoming 24-15

FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs extended their record to 4-0 with a 24-15 win over Wyoming on Friday night.
No. 20 Fresno State won four consecutive matches starting with No. 1-ranked Stephen Abas' pin in less than 2 minutes. Abas recorded his seventh pin this season, his third coming in less than 2 minutes, with a 1 minute and 55 second pounding on Wyoming's Reynold Candelaria.
Senior Derrick Hayes, ranked No. 13, beat Kelly McConville by a 6-2 decision in the 133 division. Hayes scored one takedown in the first period and two in the second for the win. Junior Ralph Lopez, who recently dropped from the top-20 rankings at 141 pounds, battled a close match and recorded his first dual win of the season. Lopez beat Wyoming's Mark Hamrick 7-4 for the win.
Sophomore Jim Medeiros defeated Chad Plummer by a 9-4 decision in the 149 division. Medeiros gave the Bulldogs a nine point lead over the Cowboys (15-6).
Fresno State suffered a close loss at the 157 division with No. 17-ranked Levi Prevost (W) and Ben Baca (FS). With Baca was ahead 8-7, Prevost got a reversal at or after the buzzer. On a very contraversial call, the referee gave Prevost an escape, sending the match into overtime. Prevost scored a takedown in overtime and won by a 10-8 decision.
Junior Eddie Gifford (FS) lost to Justin Salas (W) by a 5-2 decision in the 165 division. Gifford was behind by one point at the end of the third period, but Salas scored a takedown with seconds left to secure the win.
Fresno State's Britt Mooney beat E.K. Waldhaus (W) by a 7-6 decision in the 174 division to get the Bulldogs back on track and ahead by six.
After a loss at the 184 division, Fresno State scored six points on a Wyoming forfeit at 197 pounds to end the meet.
The meet began at the heavyweight division with the Bulldogs falling to Wyoming.
Fresno State will take two weeks off before hosting UC Davis and Purdue on Friday, Jan. 4 at 5 and 7 p.m.
