FRESNO, Calif. - Lindsay Logan had a torrid first half to guide Fresno State to an early lead, and the Bulldogs managed to hang on late to defeat Cal State Fullerton 75-65 at the North Gym. The win improves the Bulldogs' record to 4-2 while CSF drops to 1-3.
Logan was simply magnificent in the opening stanza. She indicated the degree to which she would sear the Titans on the game's first play, when she executed a ankle-busting crossover dribble to get open and nailed a 17-foot jump shot to give FS a 2-0 lead. When the horn sounded to end the first 20 minutes, Logan had racked up 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 6-of-7 from beyond the arc. Behind Logan, Fresno State led 46-25 at intermission.
But the second half was an entirely different story. Cal State Fullerton started utilizing center Heather Hansen on nearly every possession, and the junior center responded. Hansen scored 14 of her team-high 18 points in the second half and brought the Titans back to within seven with just over two minutes remaining. But an Omelogo Udeze three-point play with 1:29 left put the nail in the CSF coffin and bridged the way for a Fresno State win.
"I think the first half showed what our team is capable of," head coach Britt King said. "We are very proud of the way we played in the first half. But we're disappointed in the way we played the second half. That is the first time this year we haven't been good defensively for an entire 20 minutes."
King credited Cal State Fullerton's altered game plan as a key to its ability to make the game close in the second half.
"In the first half, they played more on the perimeter," King said. "But in the second half, they changed their game plan from the perimeter to the inside. And we just didn't do a good job stopping their inside game."
Logan ended up scoring 27 points, the third time this season she has eclipsed the 20-point plateau. Udeze added 17 while Aritta Lane had her third double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Titans were led by Hansen's 18 points and 14 boards. Tricia Lamb also had 18 points to pace Cal State Fullerton.
Fresno State improved its record in the North Gym to 4-0 this year, the team's best start at home since the 1995-96 season. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs' next game is on the road. FS travels to Flagstaff, Ariz., to play Northern Arizona on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. PST.
