RENO, Nev. - Fresno State threw a scare into one of the WAC's best home teams, but in the end came up just short, falling to Nevada 71-68 in front of a season-high 2,333 at the Lawlor Events Center. The win improves the Wolf Pack to 15-11 (8-6 WAC) while the Bulldogs drop to 9-17 (5-9 WAC).
The first half was close through the opening minutes, but a 19-4 Fresno State run over 8:46 gave the Bulldogs a 23-13 lead with 7:49 left. But immediately after FS finished its spurt, Nevada embarked on a 12-2 run over its own, eventually tying the game 25-25 with 3:58 remaining in the first half. The two teams played nip-and-tuck basketball through the rest of the half, with Lindsay Logan's 10-foot floater at the buzzer giving the Bulldogs a 38-35 lead at the intermission.
The second half was as tight as a waistline after Thanksgiving dinner. The stanza featured nine lead changes and three ties, with neither team taking a lead any larger than four points until Logan converted a three-point play with 3:58 to go, giving FS a 60-55 advantage. But Nevada immediately went on a 7-0 run to take a 62-60 lead with 2:55 left.
But Logan, proving her worth as perhaps the WAC's top player, nailed a three-pointer from 21 feet, allowing the Bulldogs to retake the lead, 63-62. But Kate Smith's layup on the other end made it 64-63 Wolf Pack with 2:07 on the clock.
After a missed Fresno State shot, Ashley Bastian hit a clutch three-pointer with 1:30 remaining, giving Nevada a four-point edge. But the Bulldogs weren't out of it. Channan High put back a Logan miss, bringing FS within two points. After two Nevada free throws, Laura Paukert made a three-pointer with 21 seconds to play, bringing Fresno State within 69-68.
Katie Golomb was fouled with 12.8 seconds left and made both free throws, making it 71-68, Nevada, and setting up one last shot for the Bulldogs. It was taken by Logan with four ticks left on the clock, but was off the mark. The ball was volleyed around until the horn sounded, giving Nevada the victory.
Logan led Fresno State with 24 points and five assists. Kate Smith led the Wolf Pack with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Next for the Bulldogs is a trip to Tulsa, which FS plays Thursday at 5 p.m.
