No. 18 Grapplers Clean Up at All-California Tournament

FRESNO, Calif. - 18th ranked Fresno State claimed the All-California Tournament title with a score of 123.5, beating second place Cal Poly by 59. Six California schools wrestled in the tournament, an all-day event hosted by San Francisco State. The 'Dogs had six first place and four second place finishes with 14 wrestlers, four of which were exhibition.
The Bulldogs won the finals of the first three divisions with victories coming from No. 1 Stephen Abas, No. 12 Derrick Hayes and Ralph Lopez. Abas went 3-0 earning a two technical falls and a pin to claim a championship in the 125 division.
Hayes got a major decision and two decisions, including one over Fresno State's Ben Martinez in the finals of the 133 division. This is a repeat performance for these two wrestlers who were matched up in the finals of the Fullerton Open earlier this season.
Lopez got two technical falls and a decision over Stanford's Levi Weikel-Magden in the finals of the 141 division. Jim Medeiros took second place in the 149 division with a 2-1 performance, falling to Cal Poly's Cedric Hayman 4-2 in the finals.
No. 15 Nathan Vasquez had a 3-0 showing with a technical fall in the championship match to win first place in the 157 division. Eddie Gifford claimed second place going 2-1 in the 165 division.
Jason Rossotti took first in the 184 division and Tom Gohde took second in the 197 division with 3-0 and 2-1 performances respectively. No. 3 Billy Blunt got a 5-3 decision over UC Davis' Mike Maben for the heavyweight title.
Other Fresno State participants include Justin McLelland (125), Darrick Duran (165) and Grant Harrington (Hwt). In team finishes, Cal State Fullerton took third with 55.5, Stanford took fourth with 52.5, San Francisco State took fifth with 44 and UC Davis took sixth with 37.
Fresno State's next action and final home meet is against No. 12 Oregon State on Friday, February 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the North Gym.
