FRESNO, Calif. - Career nights from Channan High and Tiffany Simon helped lead Fresno State past San Jose State 83-62 at the North Gym. The Bulldogs' victory improves their record to 8-13 (4-5 WAC) while SJSU drops to 10-11 (2-8 WAC).
The win continued Fresno State's dominance over San Jose State since the 1983-84 season. FS's victory was its seventh in a row over SJSU and the 27th time in the last 29 meetings the Bulldogs have emerged triumphant. Fresno State now leads the all-time series 31-13.
Fresno State never trailed in the 21-point win, but the Spartans did remain within shouting distance in the first half. The Bulldogs led only 30-27 as time was running out in the opening stanza when Omelogo Udeze made a layup, giving FS a five-point lead heading into the lockerroom.
The Bulldogs poured it on in the second half, scoring 51 points, the most the team has racked up in a half this season. Things didn't get any better for the Spartans at the 10:45 mark when Atari Parker, who had 20 points at the time, picked up her fourth foul of the game then was hit with a technical foul - giving her five fouls and disqualifying her from the game. Over the next 1:30, the Bulldogs outscored SJSU 9-0 to open up a 20-point advantage, putting the game out of reach. Fresno State eventually led by as many as 22 before settling for the 83-62 win.
Several Bulldogs posted either season or career high numbers. Simon's 24 points was a career high, as was High's 19. Lindsay Logan had 13 points and a season-high 10 assists, posting her first double-double of the season and fourth of her career. Udeze posted her eighth double-double of the season - six of which have come in WAC games - by scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Fresno State shot 50 percent, only the third time this year the team has eclipsed the 50 percent plateau.
Parker and Danada Smith comprised most of San Jose State's offense. The duo combined to score 47 of SJSU's 62 points, with Smith notching game-high scoring honors with 27. However, the Spartans struggled from the floor, shooting only 29 percent.
Next for the Bulldogs is the annual trip to Hawaii. Fresno State will take on the Wahine on Thursday at 9 p.m. PST.
