FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs scored 12 runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure third place in the 23rd Annual Pepsi Johnny Quik Classic, before 3,327 at Pete Beiden Field. Bob Runyon entered the game in the fourth and finished the game off for Fresno State improving his record to 2-0, while Matt Vorwald's record dropped to 3-2 on the season.
Fresno State got out to an early lead over the Fighting Illini in the bottom of the fourth when Brad Harper hit his sixth home run of the season to score Oscar Lopez giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
Illinois took the lead in the top of the fifth when they scored four runs. Rob Fischer led off the inning with a triple to get things rolling for the Fighting Illini. The following batter Patrick Arlis singled to left to score Fischer. Five batters later T.F. Meagher doubled to score three runs giving the Fighting Illini a 4-2 lead over the Bulldogs.
In the Bottom of the eighth, Fresno State tied a school record by scoring twelve runs in the inning. The last time the Bulldogs scored 12 runs in a inning was against Cal Poly on March 8, 1983.
Fresno State is back in action Tuesday when they travel to Pacific at 7 p.m. in Billy Hebert Field.
