Men Finish Fifth, Women 10th at Cal-Nevada Championships

IRVINE, Calif. - The men and women competed in the 2001 Cal-Nevada Championships on Saturday, April 28, and Sunday, April 29, at UC Irvine in Irvine, Calif. The men finished the day in fifth place with 63 points, while the women landed in 10th with 36 points.
Topping the performances on the men's side was senior Ryan Beckenhauer (Reedley, Calif.), who for the third-straight week set a provisional qualifying mark in the shot put. This time the thrower tossed a 59-8 1/2, improving from his previous PQ mark of 59-4 1/4, while earning third place. Junior Roosevelt Cook (Ontario, Calif.) clocked a personal-best 1:50.88 in the 800 meters, while finishing in second place. Also, sophomore Josh Roddy (Manteca, Calif.) improved his personal-best in the 1,500 meters while on his way to a third place finish. Roddy crossed the finish line with a time of 3:49.09.
On the women's side, junior javelin thrower Kayla Russum (Lake Stevens, Calif.) highlighted the day with her provisional qualifying mark of 155-4. Her personal-best throw landed her in first place, while improving from 151-10. Senior Jynette Grayson-Reed (Stockton, Calif.) clocked a 55.14 in the 400 meters, earning her second place. Freshman Olga Gutierrez (Visalia, Calif.) inked sixth place and a personal-best in the 5,000 meters, with her time of 17:51.99
Fresno State track and field will host its final home meet of the season on Saturday, May 5, at Warmerdam Field. Events are slated to begin at noon.
