FRESNO, Calif. - No. 24 Fresno State didn't miss a beat as it made an absolute mockery of San Francisco State on Thursday. The Bulldogs could have shut out the Gators if it weren't for an injured 184 division wrestler. Fresno State forfeited at the 184 division, handing San Francisco State its only six team points of the meet.
The Gators gave up 12 team points with forfeits in the 141, 157, and heavyweight divisions, which played a role in widening the gap between the teams.
Senior Derrick Hayes opened the meet with a major decision victory over Armando Orozco in the 133 division. After a 141 division forfeit, sophomore Jim Medeiros won a close 4-3 decision over San Francisco State's Ricky Garcia. Medeiros and Garcia were tied at two points apiece going into the third period, where Medeiros scored his first offensive points of the match to win by one.
Junior Eddie Gifford kept the ball rolling with a 4-2 decision over Josh McDonald in the 165 division. McDonald was ahead 1-0 going into the third period, but Gifford got an escape, takedown and penalty point to clench the victory.
At the 174 division, freshman Britt Mooney won a narrow 3-1 victory over Brian Ysias. Fresno State's Marcio Botelho won 12-7 over Drew Dunbar in the 197 division.
In the last match of the meet, No. 1-ranked Stephen Abas toyed with Joey Bareng and led 8-4 before pinning him in 3 minutes and 44 seconds.
The Bulldogs improved to 6-1 while the Gators fell to 0-7.
