FRESNO, Calif. - Bulldogs Host San Francisco State and Boise State
Fresno State will take on two winless teams Thursday, the San Francisco State Gators (0-6) and the Boise State Broncos (0-3). The Bulldogs are 25-11 all-time against the Gators. Last season Fresno State beat San Francisco State 32-8 on the road. Boise State is nearly ranked in the top-25 with three nationally ranked wrestlers. The Broncos feature No. 6 Ben Vombaur at the 125 division, No. 20 Gabe Vigil at the 141 division and No. 12 Collin Robertson at the 149 division. Boise State takes on Pac-10 conference opponent Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday before heading to Fresno.
Fresno State Upset by Purdue
The Bulldogs broke their string of five wins with a 27-7 loss to the Purdue Boilermakers in the second of two meets Friday. The unranked Boilermakers featured four nationally ranked wrestlers in the 125, 174, 197 and Hwt. divisions. Fresno State mustered only two wins coming from senior Stephen Abas (Hayward, Calif.) and junior Ralph Lopez (Fresno, Calif.). Abas beat fifth-ranked Chris Fleeger 9-0 and Lopez beat Paul Sacquitne 6-4. No. 15 Derrick Hayes (Seaside, Calif.) was upset by Rene Hernandez 16-4 in the 133 division. Fresno State was forced to scramble wrestlers in the 174 and 184 divisions after 184 pounder freshman Landon Seefeldt (Modesto, Calif.) sustained an injury in the meet prior against UC Davis. Non-starter junior Brian Spalliero (Grass Valley, Calif.) wrestled at the 174 division and freshman Britt Mooney (Bakersfield, Calif.) was bumped up to the 184 division.
Bulldogs Defeat UC Davis
Fresno State dominated the Aggies on Friday, winning seven matches en route to a 30-10 victory. Abas pinned Tommy Schurcamp in 1 minute and 58 seconds following a UC Davis forfeit in the Hwt. division. Lopez (141) got a 12-6 win over Cris Brines, sophomore Jim Medeiros (Fremont, Calif.) (149) won a 5-3 decision over Kevin Jones and junior Ben Baca (Fresno, Calif.) (157) beat Jeremiah Jarvis 10-6. Mooney and Marcio Botelho (Lemoore, Calif.) also earned wins for the Bulldogs in the 174 and 197 divisions respectively.
