Almada Eliminated in Round of 16 in Regionals

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's top singles player Hector Almada fell in the round of 16 at the Omni Hotels Regionals in Moraga, Calif.
The junior opened play Sunday with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over No. 17-seed Sven Swinnen of Oregon. In the round of 16, Almada, the ninth seed, lost to Washington's Matt Hanlin, the No. 3 seed, 7-5, 7-5, eliminating Almada from the tournament.
Also playing Sunday was freshman Marc Schaerer, who lost in the third round to ninth-seeded Oded Teig 6-3, 6-0. Schaerer and Almada were the final two Bulldogs remaining in the singles draw.
Almada and partner Stefan Suta are still alive in doubles. The team received a default into the round of 16 when Reid Arthur and Shaun Whitney of Gonzaga were forced to pull out. Almada and Suta will play the No. 11 seeds Fred Sundsten and Nick Weiss of Washington on Monday.
In the consolation bracket, five Fresno State players are still alive. All advancing to the fourth round were Danny O'Rourke, Greg Shearer, Stefan Suta, Dustin Ilic and Alex Krohn.
The tournament continues Tuesday at Saint Mary's College.
