FRESNO, Calif. - Alex Krohn's three-set victory at No. 6 singles clinched Fresno State's 4-3 victory over UC Irvine at the Anteater Tennis Stadium on Monday.
The victory snapped the Bulldogs' 10-match road losing streak. Fresno State had not won on the road since defeating Santa Clara on April 19, 2001, at Santa Clara.
Krohn's 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win over Greg Biorkman came with the match tied 3-3. The entire final set was played with the match hanging in the balance.
"That was a tremendous win for Alex and a great win for our team," head coach Brad Dancer said. "To get a road win like this in the season opener is a big lift for us. We had a lot of guys play very well, and that's what we'll need with the tough first part of the season."
Fresno State, ranked No. 60 in the nation, was forced to battle from behind after losing the doubles point. The Bulldogs lost at Nos. 1 and 3 but did pick up a victory at No. 2 behind Danny O'Rourke and Greg Shearer, who knocked off Biorkman and Dontia Haynes 8-4.
In singles, the top of the lineup was a key for Fresno State. Hector Almada, Stefan Suta and Greg Shearer, playing Nos. 1, 2 and 3, respectively, each won their matches in straight sets. The win for Suta improved his 2002-03 record to a sparkling 14-1. Almada moved to 10-3.
Next up for Fresno State is a date Friday at 1:30 p.m. with UCLA, the top-ranked team in the nation.
